Week Six: A Work Day

I apologize for cancelling this week's lesson with such short notice. An unfortunate flu bug kept me at home. Please take this week as extra time to work on the research paper and communication audit. We will have our first class workshop next week, and the guest lecture will be postponed to week eight. Your research paper WILL BE DUE ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15TH. But, please come to class next week prepared to give a presentation of your research thus far. This presentation will count as your midterm - five percent of your final grade. We will make-up this week's lesson with individual meetings later in the term.

-JOURNAL SIX-
Post the introductory paragraph of your research paper. This paragraph should include a thesis statement. For this paper, the thesis statement will be a claim about the theory you have researched. For example, the system theory of Katz and Kahn, as stated in "The Social Psychology of Organizations," attempts to provide a metaphor for understanding organizations that goes beyond both classical and humanistic theories (Modaff and DeWine 69). This attempt created a completely new way of thinking about organizations as living organisms.

Blog/Journal #6:Research Paper Indroduction Paragraph

Looking at the working conditions for many who worked in the late 19th century in factories, coal mines, steel mines, and paper companies, just to name a few, were working conditions which would make one think that the employees working at the grass-roots level were treated as if they were robots. They were told what to do, how to do it and exactly how much time they had to produce a certain amount of work; their pay depended on their output. This method of labor could be compared to Scientific management, a system that viewed people as machines, governed by time and motion.

According to Modaff and Dewine, the Industrial Revolution emerged in the eighteen and nineteen centuries it became necessary for organizations to make changes in how they managed production. During this time there were two principal theories of organization management the military and the Catholic Church. These theories consisted of a strict control of workers, chain of command, predictability of behavior, and downward influence are characteristics of these two successful organization that emerged into the modern organization theory(p.21).
One of the classical theories of organization is to establish rules for workers by implementting rules to cover every possible situation that might occur. Max Weber believes by establishing the written rules managers would minimize misunderstandings in organizations, and these rules will make the organization more efficient (p.23).

Classical Theories of Organizations:
The roles of managers as leaders within a business require them to plan future economic objectives for the business to reach. However in order to achieve these plans, control is needed to ensure that workplace compliance and high levels of efficiency are achieved. Through control, management are able to establish processes, implement them and if necessary redesign them. This essay will introduce key management theories from the likes of Frederick Winslow Taylor, Henri Fayol and Max Weber and discuss how these theories help to enforce workplace compliance. I see many thought-provoking questions introduced here. It is crucial that we analyze the many theories discussed in class both from a critical and a historical perspective. Our first hunch is probably to sharpen our intellectual teeth by gnawing at the many apparent flaws of, in particular, classical theoriests. Upon a deeper investigation, however, I think we are all beginning to see the value and pervasiveness of ideas such as Taylor's notion of "scientific management." We should question any STRICT adherence to theory as dogma in any case, regardless of if the dogmatic approach is derived from Taylor, Fayol and Weber or from an overly-human character like "The Office's" David Brent.

I am delighted so far by our explorations and can't wait to delve further into each of your research projects. Good luck!

Final Project Requirements

Part One The Theoretical Research Paper.
The classical theory of organizations under investigation in my report that I will examine in my report is Taylor’s Theory of scientific management. These theories of organization emerged in in previous time’s part of the twentieth century and still permeate certain sectors of organizational life today.
Frederick Taylor (1856-1915), is considered the ‘father of scientific management proposed his theory of organizations in The Principles of scientific management. In his book he demonstrated or outlined his task of scientific management and how managers could maximize profits for both the employer and employee. The major problem is getting employees to work at their maximum capacity at all times. He was noted that employers rarely worked at this level; in fact, most would expand only enough effort to work at the safest, minimum-out put level. Deliberately working slowly as to avoid expanding more effort than deemed necessary he referred to as systematic soldiering.

Without Communication in the firm you work in it is really difficult for any work to be done. I am going to speak about the firm I work at and how I think the communication process should change.
